Over 100 million people watched the Super Bowl last year, and this year’s game in New Jersey promises to draw an equally big crowd. But as husbands anticipate watching Super Bowl XLVIII, many wives don’t want to just stand on the sidelines. How do couples navigate viewing a major sporting event and score wedded bliss?
I asked my own man what bothers men most when it comes to watching the Game. This is all theoretical, of course …
How to bug your husband during the Super Bowl
- Talk during the commercials
- Trash talk football
- Cheer for the “other team”
- Plan a “woman party” at the same time
- Have bad snacks
That doesn’t seem so hard to avoid! These potential penalties reveal more about what our husbands really want from us when the big game is on. Your man might wait for the Super Bowl, Final Four, World Series, or World Cup, but wives have the chance to bless their guys when the game begins.
How to bless your husband during the Super Bowl
- Give him space to enjoy himself
- Respect what matters to him
- Be on his team
- Help him relax, instead of competing with him
- Be “all in” when it comes to his joy
We know “A joyful heart is good medicine, But a broken spirit dries up the bones,” (Proverbs 17:22). By giving our man space to enjoy the big game, welcoming his fun, and serving him well, we essentially show we care about giving him the good medicine of fun. We can do our part to allow him (to HELP him!) have a joyful heart!
10 Tips for Wives on Super Bowl Sunday
- Love Pinterest? Find fun game time snacks to serve!
- Invite your man to invite friends over (If yours come, give the guys space)
- Prayerfully ask the Lord to give you a servant’s heart
- Learn something about your man’s team
- Use napkins, cups or plates in his team colors
- You can love football too, but let him enjoy the guys
- Planning to watch the game? Don’t be an interrupter
- Got kids? Plan ahead for their needs, & don’t let them disrupt
- Decide right now that you won’t complain or “make him pay” for watching
- Make a dessert or sign or jersey with HIS team on it … he will love you!
By supporting his fun in watching the game … you support HIM. You might not care at all about football, or you might be more of a fan than he is! Every couple is unique, but use opportunities like this one to show your man you support him and cheer him on in nurturing his love of _____. He will appreciate knowing you’re respecting his hobby and looking out for his joyful heart. That’s not only good medicine for your armchair quarterback; it’s also good medicine for your who family-team!

Julie… this was a funny read to me. In my house, it is so backwards… I love football and Randy could care less. In the past, he would go with me to football parties and he would be engaging in the football talk- this may have been just courting fun. Now, he says you enjoy your game and makes himself scarse. but always comes back to enjoy halftime food!

That’s awesome! I know you’re not the only football-loving female out there! Okay … so forward this one to Randy 😉
