Are you worried about the shortage of Velveeta Cheese leading up to the Super Bowl weekend? Do you need a Velveeta and Hormel Chili Dip alternative?
If you live outside the US, you might wonder what all the hype is. To some, Velveeta is a rubbery, pseudo-food we sneak into favorite recipes as we push aside guilt that we’re feeding our family something plastic š To others, it’s a traditional ingredient in recipes suited to parties where quick, gooey snack food invites guests to gather ’round. The Super Bowl prompts American football parties where people often serve tortilla chips and a warm dip made of Velveeta Cheese mixed with canned Hormel Chili. (Just typing that in makes me realize that it sounds … kind of gross!) But there’s something so “right” about it when it meets a salty tortilla chip.
But not this year. Word in the grocery aisle is that Velveeta’s stock has run out and cooks will be hard pressed to make the traditional American game day dip. No worries! I want to share my Better than Velveeta Superbowl Party Dip that is equally simple, warm, gooey, and tasty. It’s a Velveeta and Hormel Chili Dip alternative, and it’s guaranteed to call your armchair quarterbacks to gather ’round and dip a chip … or two or ten.
Better than Velveeta Super Bowl Party Dip
- 1 can of Hormel Chili in your favorite variety (I used Turkey with beans)
- 1 can refried beans (I used fat free)
- 6 oz (sliced) Queso Fresco (I used Cacique Ranchero Queso Fresco. Find this in the refrigerated section by fresh mozarella.)
- 1 cup of shredded Mexican blend cheese
- Spray a shallow, round baking dish (mine was about 10 inches across and an inch deep) with non-stick cooking spray.
- Spread the refried beans all over the bottom.
- Next spread the chili evenly over the beans.
- Lay slices of queso evenly around the top
- Sprinkle shredded cheese all over the top.
- Bake the dip at 350 degrees for 20 minutes.
- Serve with tortilla chips or crackers. Whether or not you declare “no double dipping” is up to you. š
