Pop on over to Do Not Depart today, where I’m sharing about a worship song with deep truths I love. It never fails to stir & encourage my soul!
Heaven is full of light. Jesus said, “I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness,” (John 12:26). And to those who follow Him, Jesus said He “called you out of darkness into his marvelous light,” (1 Peter 2:9). Being part of the Kingdom of God means leaving darkness for marvelous light.
But Satan came as an angel of light, so we need to know more about the source of the light in Heaven.
Visit to Heaven stories are nothing new. They often include descriptions of dark tunnels, contrasted with beings of light beckoning visitors onward. Our enemy regularly dangles “objects of light” in front of us to cause us to stray from God’s path. Have you even been tempted by beauty, material possessions, popularity, comfort, fun, or recognition? Me too. Satan comes as an angel of light. We need to know where the light comes from in Heaven and what purpose it serves, if we’re to discern whether it’s the true light of Jesus or a deceitful light.
God’s throne in Heaven
If we just look in the book of Revelation, we’ll find references to God’s throne 39 times. In his book The Glory of Heaven, John MacArthur says, “All activity in heaven focuses in this direction, and all the furnishings of heaven reflect the glory that emanates from here.” MacArthur points out that the 2 most important structures in a capitol were the temple and palace, representing spiritual and government authority. God’s throne is both: “All heaven is His palace, and all heaven is His temple.”
The source of heavenly light
Does the shining, luminescent quality of heaven just come from the the crystal-like sea of glass before the throne, from the flashing lights, from the beams like rainbows, or from the beauty of precious stones? There’s no doubt there’s a lot of heavenly bling, but the source of heavenly light far surpasses all of the splendor. The Apostle John reveals the origin of heavenly light.
And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it, and its gates will never be shut by day—and there will be no night there.” (Revelation 21:22-25)
Scripture does not describe dark tunnels or creepy corridors. With the very presence of God as the source of light, Heaven is fully illuminated! When we move from spiritual darkness to marvelous light, there is no half-light place. We are either in dark or in light. The true light of Jesus, God’s own Son, will lead us to the Heavenly Father. If light is genuinely that of the Kingdom of God, all glory will point back to the Father.
“In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16) Heavenly light glorifies God.
Heavenly light comes from God and and is all about God.
