When I missed my regular blog dates in June, I made excuses … to myself. As I’m sitting down to launch July, I’m already making excuses. I’m looking at being part of an amazing conference at the end of the month, and I need to finish my prep for 4 workshops I’m excited to present. I’m also a bit tired, friends, and I feel the Lord whispering to me that I need to come away and rest a while and be quiet. So why do I feel like I need to make excuses?
I thought about saying, “Excuse me for making excuses,” until I realized we live in a day of making excuses. Women today are really good at making excuses for things we say we’ll do, things we wish we did, things we should do, or ways we should be. It’s trendy! We’re really good at shifting the attention from our weakness to someone or something’s failure.
Maybe you make excuses when it comes to:
- having a good attitude
- being healthy
- using your time well
- loving other people
- participating in your church
- reading your Bible
- speaking with kindness
- praying about problems
- forgiving someone
- ironing (oh, wait … that might just be me!)
We all make excuses about something. Something where victory is out of reach … so we make excuses.
So I’m not going to be blogging as much here this month. I’ll be here, but I’m also adjusting my plans and making some space to breathe and to prepare. I’m going to stop by long enough to talk about making excuses and what God has to say about our habit of making them.
This month we’ll talk about:
- Why do we make excuses, anyway?
- Do we legitimately have an excuse?
- Why shouldn’t we make excuses?
- What motivates my heart to make an excuse?
- What’s the answer to my excuses, excuses, excuses?
- Is there an alternative to making excuses?
