She did so much because she cared so much. Sometimes I felt embarrassed by her extra efforts to ensure I went to school warm, well-fed, and willing to learn. It’s hard to hide a red plastic Snoopy lunchbox filled with enough food and treats to feed a stranded track team. But the most powerful thing she did wasn’t something I saw or even knew about daily. She prayed.
I learned to love the pathway of the student way. From my own place in classrooms, I went on to mentor student teachers, teach in two states, tutor ESL children, support a special needs classroom, provide homeschool consultation, teach adults cross-culturally, have homeschool seasons with my own children, mentor at-risk teenagers academically, lead early learning programs with Head Start, and volunteer in structures learning environments of all kinds. My mom didn’t have the privilege of the opportunities I had. She lacked the experiences I gained and the degrees I earned, but her passion and prayers were the force behind my education. I love to lift up learners!
Moms invest a lot in supporting their student’s success. But the view from my desk has revealed in every setting, a parent’s prayers have the greatest potential to to steer a student’s pathway to learn. I’ve seen that truth as early as the preschool years, through elementary and into high school and beyond. Understanding how to apply prayer to academic settings empowers moms to do the work of a child’s divine advocate. Understanding how academics intersect with character takes prayer to a whole new level. That’s why I created the ABC’s of Praying for Students. The ABC’s started as a bookmark tool to prompt parents to pray with purpose around their education journey. Now, they’re going to a whole new level.
The ABC’s of Praying for Students in a new devotional!
In 2017 I worked with ministry and mom-friend Christen Price to develop the ABC’s into wall art and sets of bookmarks, expanding the reach across the United States. The simple pairing of twenty-six student-centered scriptures and key words has been used in families, public schools, Christian schools, homeschool co-ops, and churches. For my teacher’s heart, I love knowing the ABC’s have impacted countless students who are learning for life.
If you’re a mom who does so much because she cares so much, the ABC’s of Prayer will help you give your student what they need most – your prayers. “The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working,” (James 5:16b). With Christen’s encouragement, I’ve created a devotional companion for The ABC’s of Praying for Students. This devotional will be available for pre-order this July, just in time to wrap your prayers around your student’s new school year. Each devotion focuses on a single Bible passage, with a clear illustration of how it connects to what a student needs to know and grow. Practical applications follow, along with ideas for Table Talk starters to use with your learner.
