A is not my favorite letter. A is for August Adjustments & Attitude. I prefer P or S. Even I has Potential. (See, I love P.) This August, A stares me in the face demanding my attention. Adjustments force me into a corner to choose what Attitude will reign. It can be hard to give me an A+ in Attitude when mine honestly changes from time to time. I bet you’re facing adjustments in life right now too. How’s your August so far? How’s your attitude?
When I started writing The ABCs of Praying for Students I attached the word “Attitude” to the letter A. One of the first lessons of life, any life, is that we can’t control a lot of things, but we can control our attitude. Attitude refers to the blend of thoughts and feelings. Attitude is our soul perspective on what’s around us.
The big deal about Attitude
How we manage our attitude matters, because it determines our response. It’s so important that Proverbs 4:23 says, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” This refers to watching over our mind and our thinking. Our heart is the place where our attitude lives. Another version says, “it determines the course of your life.”
Attitude lives where no one sees, but it’s impacts what everyone sees.
Adjustments upsetting our Attitude
So what adjustments are you facing in your August?
- Relationship changes?
- Adjustments to expectations in school?
- New requirements at work?
- Different plans for your schedule?
- Demands caused by someone else’s rotten attitude?
Yeah, that last one’s a hard one, when someone else makes a decision or has an issue with their soul perspective that forces you to adjust. One person’s attitude affects others. These are all potholes we can avoid or fall into.
Like I shared in The ABCs of Praying for Students, I want to do more than just get my daily doings right. I want to get my attitude right. Why settle for good actions when we can hold out for growing a God-honoring attitude?
So how’s your attitude?
For me, August is my birthday month. A is for August Adjustments & Attitude. I want my soul perspective moving in God’s ways as a new year of life starts for me. So this is my prayer from the Good News version of Psalm 19:14: “May my words and my thoughts be acceptable to you, O Lord, my refuge and my redeemer!”
Happy August! Happy Adjustments! Happy Attitude!
