You know the feelings. Nervous, hopeful, scared, and excited all in your heart and mind at once. No matter the age or schooling format, a new year of school has the power to gather all the feelings, smash them together like our last playdoh creation, and push them deep in our gut until we know how it goes. Enter COVID-19, when schooling is on again and off again. Playgrounds, co-ops, libraries, bus rides, dorm rooms, and classrooms have been emptied out, shut down, and reopened. Grownups wonder what’s next, and so do students. There’s nothing like a Pandemic to make us pray.
At first the new normal of schooling felt kind of unconventional, in ways that made for good Instagram content, inspiring us to hatch chickens or start painting. But that new normal got old fast. The original character in the “Just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse” version of life, Job, wrote about God’s knowledge and planning. “But he knows the way that I take; when he has tried me, I shall come out as gold.” (Job 23:10)
There’s no time like a Pandemic to pray. We feel like learning is in limbo for students from preschool to grad school. Still informed and intentional about lessons we’re learning, God hasn’t let this school year fall through the cracks. I’ve created a new resource to help guide you in praying your way through the Pandemic.
The ABCs of Praying for Students in a Pandemic is a new resource to help caring grownups pray for the students in their lives in the new normal. Teacher, parent, parent-teacher, administrator, grandparent, or concerned neighbor – these five devotions are for you. Written to coordinate with the vowels, this timely devotion grew out of my concern and love for children learning and grownups teaching in COVID-19.

A recent walk along the Oregon coast reminded me how little ones best navigate shifting sand by walking with a trusted adult. As long as loving grownup stays to offer a hand and anchor the route, a child feels safe. A student presses on. God uses grownups whose hearts trust Him to lead learners in finding faith for times like these.
