When I wrote the first devotional for the Summer Pray the Word Journal, Psalm 3:3 felt very personal to my professional life. “But you, O Lord, are a shield about me, my glory, and the lifter of my head.” Haven’t we all experienced what it feels like to be mistreated, to have someone else’s choice sweep us into a place of disgrace? Since we can relate, it’s normal to want to be a shield from that kind of assault when those we love face unfairness. For a lot of us, the school environment is the first place we learn to look for a shield. For a lot of moms, the school environment is the first place we try to be a shield.
A new tool for school
Now that July is here, The ABCs of Praying for Students will be printed and sent to caring adults who want to give learners what they need most – prayers for the learning journey. The bookmark has already helped administrators, moms and dads, grandparents, and teachers give children the most important thing that isn’t even on a school supply list. They’ve talked to God on behalf of the learners they love. Christen Price Studio has partnered with me for years in getting The ABCs into the hands of grown ups who want to pray so it makes a difference. This year, Christen has been the encouragement behind expanding The ABs of Praying for Students into a full devotional of 26 devotions. Each includes scripture, ideas for application, and Table Talk starters.
I’m excited to share a glimpse with you of the cover for The ABCs of Praying for Students! Isn’t it beautiful? Christen Price Studio captured the hope, peace, and confidence that comes with doing the powerful work of prayer for the kids in our lives.
I don’t make a very good shield, though I’ve done my share of trying. I’ve also lost a lot of sleep envisioning what to do to protect and provide for the ones I love. There’s nothing less predictable than a mom trying to protect her own when she hasn’t had enough sleep. Psalm 28:7 has been the reminder that has helped me let go of my shield-loving urges and helped me lean on God’s strength in unfair circumstances. “The Lord is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts, and I am helped; my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to him.”
