I was in aisle 7 when I heard a loud sneeze. I whipped around to see the offender and weighed my options.
- Push her away and run? No, I would compromise our social distance and could contaminate myself when I made contact!
- Spray her down with my hand sanitizer? No, I needed to save it for myself.
- Hold tight to my toilet paper and run the other way? Yes, the best option.
It was only one sneeze and one moment, but I recognized the flash for what it was: fear.
I was afraid of what a woman’s germ could do to me. And it wasn’t long until something made my nose twitch, I sneezed, and the lady beside me whipped her head around with a look in her eyes I recognized. Fear. A lot of us are battling moments of fear. It’s human.

We don’t want to transfer anxiety to others in our lives or let it breed in our own. We need to keep messages of truth and comfort close to keep the peace.
